The village is renowned for the legend of the Childe of Hale, John Middleton. The legend tells of Hale’s very own giant, who is believed to have grown to the height of 9 feet 3 inches.

Hale is believed to have slept with his feet out the window of his whitewashed thatched cottage, which tourists can visit as well as Hale’s grave, which is located in St Mary’s Church.

Visitors can admire the village’s multitude of thatched roof cottages, which are hundreds of years old. The grand houses built in the inter-war years are also known to captivate those passing through the village.

For those that looking for a family walk near Liverpool, head to Within Way, where a kissing gate and sign post will take you further along your journey. Walking along the Mersey Way trail, you’ll find an array of wildlife and scenery as well as the Hale Head Lighthouse.

The trail will bring you back to the village, where we suspect you may want to stop off for a hearty pub meal at The Childe of Hale Public House or The Wellgton Hotel.
